What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Rather than cutting or removing tissue, therapeutic laser energy penetrates the affected area to support cellular repair, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation.

At Dental Sleep & TMJ Therapy Canberra, laser therapy is used to help manage TMJ disorders, jaw pain, muscle tension, facial pain, teeth grinding, and selected sleep-related breathing conditions. Every treatment is tailored to your individual diagnosis and delivered using advanced medical-grade laser technology.

Laser Therapy for Pain Management

We use laser therapy for patients who come in with jaw pain, facial tension, TMJ discomfort or symptoms linked to clenching and grinding. The laser delivers light energy to the affected area, which helps calm
irritated tissues and support normal recovery in muscles and joints.

It’s commonly used when the jaw feels tight, sore in the morning or when pain spreads to the temples, ears or head. We always look at the full picture first, because jaw pain is usually linked to muscle overload or bite strain, not just a single spot.

Dry Needling

Used for tight jaw, face and neck muscles that may be causing referred pain, tension or restricted movement.

Photobiomodulation

A medical laser treatment used around the jaw joint and chewing muscles to support tissue repair and reduce irritation.

Splint Therapy

A custom mouthguard designed to reduce pressure from clenching and grinding while protecting the teeth and jaw joints.

Laser Therapy for Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders

We also use laser-based treatments for patients who snore or have mild sleep-related breathing issues. These treatments focus on the soft tissues in your throat that can vibrate or collapse during sleep.

Laser therapy improves airflow and reduces snoring where suitable, based on your airway structure and symptoms.

Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)Therapy

A custom sleep device that gently moves the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway more open at night.

NightLase®

A non-surgical laser treatment for snoring that helps tighten soft tissues in the throat over a series of sessions.

LASER FRENECTOMY TREATMENT

Frenectomy In Canberra

A frenectomy is a procedure used to release a tongue tie or lip tie by treating the restrictive band of tissue that limits the normal movement of the tongue or lip. When this tissue is tight or attached in a way that restricts function, our team may recommend frenectomy following a comprehensive assessment.

At Dental Sleep & TMJ Therapy Canberra, we provide laser frenectomy treatment for patients seeking tongue-tie or lip-tie release. This is an additional service offered by our clinic and is not associated with the management of sleep-related breathing disorders, jaw pain or teeth grinding.

Some patients visit our clinic seeking support for better sleep or concerns related to jaw pain and grinding, while others specifically seek laser release of a tongue-tie. Using laser technology allows us to precisely target the affected tissue while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a suitable candidate for laser therapy?

Laser therapy may be suitable for patients experiencing jaw pain, muscle tension, teeth grinding, TMJ-related concerns, snoring or selected sleep-related breathing issues. Our team completes a full clinical assessment first to confirm whether it is appropriate for your condition and treatment goals.

Laser therapy may be recommended as part of a broader treatment plan for patients experiencing TMJ-related pain, muscle tension or jaw discomfort. It works by delivering light energy to targeted tissues to support the body’s natural healing processes and help manage inflammation.

Laser therapy is generally well tolerated and most patients report minimal discomfort during treatment. Some mild sensitivity may occur afterwards in certain cases, but this usually settles promptly and does not interfere with daily activities.

Frenectomy is provided as a separate service for tongue-tie or lip-tie release and is not part of sleep or pain management care. Depending on your assessment, other suitable treatments may be discussed and planned as part of your overall care approach.

Laser therapy may be recommended as part of a broader treatment plan for patients experiencing TMJ-related pain, muscle tension or jaw discomfort. It works by delivering light energy to targeted tissues to support the body’s natural healing processes and help manage inflammation.

The number of laser therapy sessions varies depending on your condition, its severity and how you respond to treatment. Some patients notice improvement after only a few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer course of care. During your consultation, we will assess your needs and recommend a personalised treatment plan based on your clinical findings and treatment goals.
